Catoctin Mountain Park

Catoctin Mountain Park, Maryland (23 miles, 25-minute drive from the inn) Visitors to Catoctin Mountain Park find streams replete with native trout; forests of maple, hickory, ash, oak, and cherry trees; and the air alive with the sounds of birds, chipmunks, and other wildlife. The park’s beauty is a triumph of nature’s ability to heal: the area was devastated by logging and agriculture during the 18th and 19th centuries. The park maintains 25 miles of hiking trails with difficulty ratings between easy and strenuous. Scenic vistas at the park include Chimney Rock, Hog Rock, Thurmont Vista, and the Blue Ridge Summit Overlook.

Strawberry Hill Nature Preserve

Strawberry Hill Nature Preserve, Fairfield, PA (11 miles, 19-minute drive from the inn) Easy loop trail where you can explore various Pennsylvania habitats, including wet and dry woodlands, two mountain streams, ponds, and a restored mineral quarry. Diverse plants and wildlife make their homes here, including marsh marigolds, trout lilies, deer, foxes, red-spotted newts, barred owls, pileated woodpeckers, and wild turkeys.


Picnic Options- since this park is close to Gettysburg, we recommend getting your sandwich in town. Food 101, Panera Bread, and
Mela’s Kitchen have great sandwiches.

Pine Grove Furnace State Park

Pine Grove Furnace State Park, Gardner, PA (18 miles, 31-minute drive from the inn)


Steeped in natural and historical features, the 696-acre Pine Grove Furnace State Park is at the northern tip of the Blue Ridge Mountains in an area known as South Mountain. Visitors enjoy many recreational opportunities, including Two mountain lakes (Laurel Lake and Fuller Lake), hiking the Appalachian Trail, and visiting the Appalachian Trail Museum.

King’s Gap Environmental Education Center, Carlisle, PA (34 miles, 49-minute drive from the inn)


Great hiking destination that is well known for the four-mile road that winds through its 2,531 acres to the historic Italian villa-style stone mansion atop of South Mountain. Kings Gap focuses on natural and cultural interpretation and education. Lifelong learners will appreciate both self-guided interpretive trails and guided hikes. Kings Gap is free and open year-round, from dawn to dusk.

Wolf Rock

Wolf Rock/Chimney Rock Loop, Thurmont, MD (22 miles, 23-minute drive from the inn) Chimney Rock via Thurmont Vista and Wolf Rock is a 4.1-mile heavily trafficked loop trail located near Thurmont, Maryland that features beautiful wild flowers and is good for all skill levels. The trail is primarily used for hiking and walking and is best used from April until October.

Cunningham Falls National Park

Cunningham Falls National Park, Thurmont, MD (24 miles, 25-minute drive from the inn) Cunningham Falls State Park. Surrounded by the beautiful Catoctin Mountains, Cunningham Falls State Park is home to Maryland’s highest cascading waterfall. A hiking trail and a short walking path lead to the falls, where visitors enjoy picturesque views year-round. Other hiking trails of various difficulty levels weave through the park.

Hashawha Loop

Hashawha Loop, Westminister, MD (21 miles, 30-minute drive from the inn) Hashawha Loop Trail is a 3.2-mile heavily trafficked loop trail located near Westminster, Maryland that features beautiful wildflowers and is rated as moderate. The trail offers several activity options and is accessible year-round.

Codorus State Park, Hanover, Pa. (23 miles, 23-minute drive from the inn) The 3,500-acre Codorus State Park is in the rolling hills of southern York County. The 1,275-acre Lake Marburg has 26 miles of shoreline and is a rest stop for migrating waterfowl and shorebirds.
